I love what AI brings to teaching — you've seen that across this whole site. But I won't pretend it comes without cost. Being a responsible teacher means being honest about the harms too, and using these tools with care. Here's what I keep in mind.
AI is genuinely useful. It also does real harm — and none of it is trivial. Six things that matter to me as a teacher:AI
Training and running AI uses a lot of electricity and water. Every chat has a footprint, even if we can't see it.
AI can sound confident and still be wrong. It "hallucinates" facts, and it makes fake text and images easy to create.
AI learns from human data, so it can repeat stereotypes and unfairness — about gender, culture, and more.
What you type may be stored or used to train future models. Student data is especially precious — it must never go in.
Many models were trained on artists' and writers' work without consent, and that affects how creators make a living.
If we outsource all our thinking to AI, the thinking muscle weakens — for students, and for us.
My own rule is simple: I use AI only for teaching and learning — never for profit, and never for entertainment.
None of this means "don't use AI". It means use it with eyes open. These are the commitments I try to keep — and to pass on to the teachers and students I work with:這些都不是要說「別用 AI」,而是「張開眼睛地用」。
AI is a powerful tool. Like any tool, what matters is the hands — and the heart — that use it. AI
